Emily Pauline Johnson has been designated a person of national significance for her literary contributions to Canada.  She was born 'in the square room overlooking the Grand River on March 1861'.  Pauline was the youngest of four children born to Emily Howells and Chief George H.M. Johnson and was proud of both her English and Mohawk heritages.  She was a very talented writer of poems and gave dramatic recitals of her works.  Her most famous poem 'The Song My Paddle Sings', was awarded $3.00.  She was the first acclaimed female native poet and paved many roads for writers, females amd natives alike.
